The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

I kicked off a new story-making workshop for primaries last week with a bespoke workshop for Jubilee Primary School in Stoke Newington. I'll be adding it to the canon soon as I found it an incredibly effective way to teach story structure to younger children in an exciting, enthusing way. Watch this space!

Jubillee Primary have been using the fantastic 'Mysteries of Harris Burdick' by Chris Van Allsburg as a stimulus for creating stories. The workshop involved children working in small groups to interrogate these intriguing and beautiful pictures as a means to creating original and unique stories.

I focused on generating ideas and fitting them into a structure, so that the children were able to make sense of their stories.

The session was "very effective in teaching children about a good story structure. We particularly liked the part about deciding what happens at the end – do things change or return to normal as children often struggle to end their writing.

It’s great to take storytelling out of the classroom, not write much and free them up to generate ideas."
